Low cost healthcare in Mexico – worth considering.

Low cost healthcare in Mexico is a reality, yet something many foreigners are still unaware of.   There are many good reasons to think about traveling or living in Mexico for medical treatment.

Here are just a few:

Mexican hospitals are excellent, modern and very well equipped.  67% of Mexico’s 4,466 hospitals are private, while 33% are public. The best hospitals in Mexico, according to International Citizens, are in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey, but with so many hospitals around the country, there are few places you can go where you can’t find a very modern, well-equipped hospital with well-trained medical and support staff.

According to Patients Beyond Borders, Mexico has made great strides in healthcare since 2006, becoming a global healthcare hub.

The cost of healthcare in Mexico is often much lower than in the US.  For example, a standard office visit costs about $30 to $40 US, a CAT scan is about 75% less than in the US, lab tests tend to be more about 65% less, and a private hospital room runs around $100 per night.   A quick trip from the US can literally save hundreds and hundreds of dollars in medical or dental costs.

For foreign nationals with residency status, or who reside in Mexico as retirees, Mexican health insurance is very reasonable via the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS), Mexico’s social security system, which has been around since 1943 and is said to be the largest institution in Latin America.

Foreigners residing in Mexico as retirees can purchase Mexican health insurance on a monthly basis for a low monthly fee.  For the very best healthcare, which is still considerably less expensive than in the US, ExpatArrivals advises purchasing additional health insurance to cover the cost difference, which will ensure access to one of the many private hospitals in the country, should the need arrive.
